A Light In My Soul/Una Luz En Mi Alma
“This is a huge piece of New Mexico history that’s been silenced,” Nan Elsasser, producer of A Light in My Soul/Una Luz en Mi Alma, says. “It’s very affirming and very challenging.” The play is a collaboration between Tectonic Theater Project, choreographer and director Krista DeNio, and the Working Classroom ensemble, and is the product of a two-year interview process in which New Mexican Crypto-Jews—unwilling converts to Christianity who practice their true religion in secret—voiced long-hidden experiences of societal alienation and oppression. A Light in My Soul/Una Luz en Mi Alma, high on drama and dynamism, aims to leave viewers both informed and affected. “The visual impact is equal to the verbal impact,” Elsasser says. A Light in My Soul/Una Luz en Mi Alma articulates the universal struggle to overcome obstacles and refuse fear. (Tiana Finney)
