About Us
I am a number 34 kind of guy. And the Saigon Café is the kind of place where, even if one orders the "egg noodle lo mein with grilled pork," or attempts to sound out the even trickier "mi xao heo," the server would just say, "You mean the number 34?"Up for something less butch than thick noodles full of slender, sizzled pork bits and piled with delicious, preservative-intensive Sriracha hot sauce? You might be a number 9 (steamed tofu with rice noodle soup) or a number 27 (grilled chicken with vermicelli & rice paper). Most dishes can be prepared with and augmented by a variety of tofu, vegetables or meats.
While predominantly Vietnamese, something proven by the quality of the fresh spring rolls, the banana cake and the coffee, the kitchen is comfortable with curries and fried rice dishes as well. The Vietnamese noodles, made with wheat and potato starch, are a delectable adventure and the signature "claypot" dishes made with either shrimp or catfish are mandatory self-discovery moments with plenty of spice.
Comfortable, busy and affordable, Saigon Café sits alone as the hole-in-the-wall Asian eatery adopted as a favored local joint. (Zane Fischer)
