Word Virus

Shelley Hirsch has a way with words. Actually, the writer, singer, musician and performer has her way with words. Hirsch manipulates the boundaries of language and sound to create stories that encompass both the immediate surroundings and the larger world.

Using film scores from Bernard Herrmann, whose music helped shape the atmosphere of such classic films as Psycho, Citizen Kane and Taxi Driver, Hirsch removes the narrative associated with the music and tells stories of her own that often have members of the audience as muses. For her Santa Fe performance, Hirsch teams up with local musician JA “Dino” Deane, an artist she hasn’t worked with in decades. Deane’s style, she says, “has such a wet liquid sound” that it melds perfectly with her vocal experimentation.

Hirsch’s performance is the capstone of a night of local works, including a performance by the lyrical Idris Goodwin, a film by Michael and Melody Sumner Carnahan, and language-based pieces by others. Read SFR's full interview with Hirsch. (Patricia Sauthoff)
