About Mission Café

It takes a certain panache to make Frito pie classy. It helps that the Mission Café is set in the historic Valdes home, a beautiful old adobe with railroaded dining rooms and a shady, romantic courtyard-even the most humble of dishes feels like a special treat. The Frito pie is eerily beautiful; a bowl of soupy chile, ground beef (optional) and cheese is topped with a hearty handful of Fritos, in turn garnished with shredded lettuce and finely diced tomatoes.

Breakfast selections include an all-American "sunny breakfast" with eggs and sausage or bacon. Certain breakfast dishes are served all day, like the heaping smothered breakfast burrito. On the lunch end, the huge Camino Real burrito can be filled with beef, chicken or calabacitas, and is served with all-vegetarian red or green chile, beans and especially delicious rice. The chile is comfortably hot (with the green being more mild), making even the smothered dishes palatable for out-of-town visitors.

After lunch, be sure to check out the sweet shop-as if, while ordering at the counter, you hadn't already drooled at the sight of orange-champagne cremes, piñon nut caramel turtles and cinnamon-dusted dark chocolate swirls. Also offered are trays of homemade cookies, and the bizcochitos steal the show. Share some among the table while waiting for your food, which is always delivered with a smile. (Charlotte Jusinski)

what a nice restaurant! And the food is excellent. I enjoyed it very much & the apricot pie I got for afternoon tea at home was delicious. I can't wait to get there again to have another meal. Maybe with a friend this time ! elizabeth
