About La Choza
Freshly revamped with a new, curiously tiki-style bar, La Choza isn’t just for locals anymore. OK, joking—it’s still pretty much for locals. Sure, you’ll find the odd out-of-towner asking for chile on the side, mispronouncing posole and wondering why it looks so much like hominy, but La Choza remains a heavenly hovel for the homies.
The chile is just as good as that of its downtown, tourist-heavy cousin, The Shed, but the brightly painted interior and casual courtyard are relaxing remnants of a more real Santa Fe. Some of us wish the kitchen would discover potatoes, especially to accompany huevos rancheros, but the cooks at La Choza are determined to do things their own way. In the end, it’s best to let them: You simply can’t soak up the Santa Fe sublime properly until you belt down a dinner of red chile enchiladas with an egg on top. Drinkers know that this dish goes best with a pitcher of on-tap Dos Equis.
Reservations just don’t sit well with this eatery situated on the southwest end of the Railyard park, so plan to wait and wander in a chile-jitter haze until your name is called and you can get your fix. (Zane Fischer)
